Nvidia and MediaTek are rumored to be working together to bring desktop processors to market. The 3nm chip will reportedly come out this month.
If a recent media report is to be believed, Nvidia is said to be coming to market this month with an “AI PC” CPU built on a 3nm node. This would deliver better processor performance and higher power efficiency than current standards. Mass production would start in 2025.
Soon perhaps five major players in CPU market
In the past, Nvidia has already launched an ARM chip, the Grace. That is mainly used in data centers. A chip for regular PCs and laptops is still virgin territory.
MediaTek chips are used in 80 percent of today’s smartphones. The other 20 percent are high-end smartphones with chips from Quallcom. Normally, MediaTek always partners with AMD for hardware, so it would be a surprising turn of events if the company now turns to Nvidia.
Should production do materialize, it will cause a landslide in the CPU landscape. And that is bad news for the current major players. By working together, Nvidia and MediaTek are also laying fire to Qualcom. Just earlier this summer, Qualcom launched the Snapdragon X processors, a series of laptop chips.
We do have to take this rumor with a large grain of salt, as it has not yet been confirmed by an official source.
