Microsoft introduces watermarks for AI content

copilot

Microsoft allows organizations to use policies to add watermarks to content generated by AI.

Microsoft 365 offers organizations the ability to add watermarks to video and audio content that has been generated or modified with AI. This initiative is intended to increase transparency regarding the origin of digital content. The policy takes effect starting this month and requires organizations to enable a specific setting to use this feature.

With the rise of AI tools within Microsoft 365, such as Clipchamp and Copilot, there is a growing need to clearly identify content that has been generated or modified by AI. Starting February 2026, organizations can choose to add both visual and audio watermarks to this content. A visual watermark could be, for example, AI-generated content, while an audio watermark consists of a verbal message added to the beginning or end of an audio clip.

Policy and implementation

To add watermarks, organizations must enable the Include a watermark when content from Microsoft 365 is generated or altered by AI setting via the Cloud Policy service. The setting currently only applies to video and audio content and not to images. For images, users can activate the watermark function themselves via their privacy settings.
