The latest Windows 11 24H2 update appears to contain a bug that leaves nearly 9 GB of unremovable files.

The annual Windows 11 update has left many a user with frustrations. Not only the dreaded blue screen that appeared en masse on the screens, but other problems passed the review as well.

Now it turns out that the Windows 11 24H2 update also creates a giant cache folder during installation that cannot be removed. It takes up a whopping 8.63 GB, which is a significant portion of all drives. Microsoft is aware of the problem, a solution is still pending.

Cache on installation

The Windows 11 24H2 update leaves behind a large (unwanted) package after installation. Namely, this update appears to leave behind a large cache folder that cannot be deleted. The folder has a large size of 8.63 GB that spreads across part of all drives (but not the largest).

The cache itself is not the problem, as this is common with any installation of Windows updates. In fact, it is intended as a temporary repository for installation files. Under normal circumstances, it can be removed once the update is complete, but that does not seem to be working now.

Attempts have already been made by Windows Latest to remove the cache via Control Panel. Going through the removal process is flawless, but still the cache persists. Microsoft was notified of the problem and is preparing a patch to resolve the issue. This would appear with an upcoming Windows update. In the meantime, it is recommended not to reinstall Windows.
