The system requirements for Copilot+ PCs have been quietly increased by Microsoft.
Microsoft updated the system requirements for Windows 11 in March and clarified what is needed for the new generation of “Copilot+ PC ‘s’. These PC” s are designed for AI functionalities available from Windows 11 version 24H2.
New Requirements for AI PCs
The basic system requirements for Windows 11 have not changed, but those who want access to the Copilot+ features need to acquire more powerful hardware. For instance, an NPU (Neural Processing Unit) capable of at least 40 TOPS (trillion operations per second) is required.
Additionally, Microsoft has raised the minimum to 16 GB DDR5 or LPDDR5 memory and 256 GB of storage (SSD or universal flash storage).
Which Chips are Suitable?
On the updated page, Microsoft now explicitly lists compatible processors: AMD Ryzen AI 300 series, Intel Core Ultra 200V series, and Qualcomm Snapdragon X series.
This change makes it easier for users to determine if their device is ready for the AI capabilities in Windows 11 24H2. However, they will need to acquire a new system if they want to use Copilot+ PCs. Without an NPU, these will not function.
