The European Commission was hit by a cyberattack on March 24, the organization itself reports. Malicious actors gained unauthorized access to the AWS cloud environment on which the Europa.eu web platform runs. By responding quickly to the attack, services to citizens and organizations were not disrupted. The organization is currently investigating the incident.

Data stolen

The ongoing investigation shows that website data may have been stolen during the attack. The Commission has promptly informed all involved EU entities of the incident. The Commission is still investigating exactly which data was leaked and what the potential consequences are. According to BleepingComputer, the malicious actors allegedly stole more than 350 GB of data, including several databases.
