Apple closes multi-billion dollar deal with Google and will use multiple Gemini models to power its AI assistant Siri.
Apple and Google have struck a remarkable deal: Gemini will be the driving force behind Siri. The deal is reportedly worth a billion dollars a year and involves a custom Gemini model with 1.2 billion parameters.
Multiple Models
Apple is choosing to use not one but multiple Gemini models. According to the iPhone maker, this allows Siri to provide more personalized answers and better perform tasks that require multiple steps. This results in lower infrastructure costs for Apple.
The approach is in line with Google’s current offering. Gemini 3 consists of multiple variants with different performance levels and prices, from Flash to the much more expensive Pro model.
Cloud, privacy and existing deals
Apple indicated that Gemini will be used in combination with Google’s cloud technology, Google Cloud. At the same time, the company emphasizes that Apple Intelligence will continue to run on its own devices and Private Cloud Compute, where user data is deleted after processing.
The existing collaboration with OpenAI around ChatGPT remains unchanged. The news pushed the stock market value of Google’s parent company Alphabet above $4 trillion, a milestone reached by only a few tech giants.
