Google Launches Cameyo: a Modern Way to Keep Using Old Apps

Windows and Linux apps work directly in your browser thanks to Google Cameyo.

Google integrates Cameyo into its enterprise offering to help companies easily use their classic Windows and Linux apps via the browser, without heavy virtualization or complex installations.

The Gap between Vision and Reality

Many IT leaders say their future is web-based, but half of their key software still runs as traditional desktop applications. As a result, companies often remain stuck with old systems while simultaneously wanting to implement AI and evolve towards more modern workplaces

Google aims to bridge this gap with Cameyo. Instead of displaying a full virtual desktop, Cameyo delivers only the app itself. You simply open an old Windows app in the browser on your laptop, Chromebook, or even tablet. For employees, little changes: the app works as they’re used to, but without extra steps or separate environments.

One Environment for all Apps

In combination with Chrome Enterprise Premium, both web apps and classic desktop apps now end up in one secure environment. This results in less hassle for IT and an automatically better-secured environment. At the same time, Gemini AI can work alongside these apps to streamline tasks.

More Freedom for IT

Cameyo also makes it much easier to switch to ChromeOS or Google Workspace, as the “app problem” disappears: even that one old program for which you still needed Windows now works directly via the browser.

With Cameyo, Google wants to give companies the freedom to modernize their workplace environment step by step. Old tools remain available, new technologies can be implemented faster, and employees get one simple place where all their apps come together.
