Gmail discontinues Gmailify and POP3 for external accounts

Gmail is ending Gmailify and retrieving email via POP3 from external mailboxes starting in January 2026.

Gmail is discontinuing two features that allowed users to link emails from other providers to their Gmail environment. These are Gmailify and the option to retrieve emails from other accounts via POP3 in Gmail. Google indicates that both options will no longer work from January 2026.

Gmailify disappears

Gmailify allowed users to apply certain Gmail features to a mailbox with another provider. Google is now discontinuing this feature, which means that features including spam protection, improved mobile notifications and inbox categories are no longer possible.

For organizations, this means that the management of external mailboxes can be done less through Gmail itself. IT teams that use Gmailify for filtering or classification should check which components will be lost as a result. On mobile, it will still be possible to read and send emails from another account via the Gmail app. Google uses a standard IMAP connection for this, according to the announcement.

Alternatives

Gmail also no longer allows users to import emails from external accounts via POP3. As a result, the ‘Check emails from other accounts’ option will disappear in the web version. Anyone who currently brings multiple mailboxes together in one Gmail inbox via POP3 must switch to a different approach.

Google is putting forward two alternatives. The first option is to set up automatic forwarding with the other email provider. New messages will then arrive directly in the primary Gmail inbox. The second option is to add the external account in the Gmail app on Android, iPhone or iPad, again via IMAP.
