OpenAI added the new settings after mixed reactions from users to previous updates. For example, a previous version of the chatbot was adjusted because it was perceived as excessively flattering. In a later update, the tone was changed again because users described the chatbot as too distant and cold. With the new adjustments, OpenAI wants to give users more control over how ChatGPT communicates.

The changes apply to both free users and paying subscribers and are intended to better tailor the interaction with the chatbot to personal preferences.
Criticism of overly personal tone
