Asus launches ProArt PA40SU: external SSD enclosure without SSD

Asus introduces the ProArt PA40SU. This external SSD enclosure with USB4 support for data transfers up to 40 Gbps is designed for creative professionals.

With the ProArt PA40SU, Asus is launching an external SSD enclosure, excluding the SSD itself. The device supports USB-C with transfer speeds up to 40 Gbps. It carries the ProArt label, which indicates that Asus is targeting creative professionals.

The ProArt PA40SU supports NVMe M.2 SSDs in both 2230 and 2280 formats. The device has a slim 13.5 mm profile and comes in a black finish. The enclosure weighs 127 g and is compatible with Windows 11 and 10, as well as macOS 14.4 or later.

Active cooling for heavy workloads

The ProArt PA40SU features a four-level active cooling system that prevents heat buildup during intensive use. This is intended to prevent throttling during long sessions of video editing, backups, and large file transfers. According to Asus, internal tests showed the device could transfer up to 2,960 GB of data in thirty minutes, provided the installed SSD supports such speeds.

Installing the SSD should be simple. No screws are required, as Asus has provided a push-button mechanism.

The device is more relevant today than ever, as storage becomes increasingly expensive. The enclosure allows users to reuse SSDs they already own. For example, you could install a high-performance SSD from a decommissioned laptop.

Availability

The ProArt PA40SU will be available in the Benelux starting in May. Asus includes an exclusive ProArt SSD Dashboard tool with the enclosure for real-time monitoring of SSD status and performance.
