March Update for Windows 11 Freezes During Installation (and That’s Not the Only Problem)

windows update

Installing the latest security update for Windows 11 is a matter of persistence. But even after installation, the problems are not over.

New month, new Windows update: every second Tuesday of the month is Patch Tuesday for Microsoft. In line with tradition, the first problems after the rollout don’t take long to appear. These may start as early as during the installation of the update.

Windows Latest saw the installation freeze at various points, three times to be exact. They’re not the only ones. Other users receive error messages indicating that the installation is not proceeding correctly. This can happen around thirty percent, but also when the update is 98 to 99 percent complete, resulting in a restart of the installation.

Remote Desktop

If the installation does succeed, you may still not be free from bugs and crashes. The update can break the Remote Desktop Protocol for business management over the network in Windows 11. Either the connection fails to establish, or it disconnects within ten minutes.

The Remote Desktop problem can be solved with a workaround while waiting for a fix patch. Disable UDP connections via Group Policy Editor or via the Windows registry. Press the key combination WIN + R and run gpedit.msc or regedit. Navigate to: Computer ConfigurationAdministrative TemplatesWindows ComponentsRemote Desktop ServicesRemote Desktop Client and find the setting Turn Off UDP On Client. Set it to Enabled and restart the device.

If you’re using the Windows registry, navigate to the following location:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows NT\Terminal Services\Client\ and find the key fClientDisableUDP. You may need to create this value yourself. Set the value to 1.

More Than 50 Vulnerabilities

In addition to faulty Remote Desktop connections, blue screens or boot problems are also possible. In such cases, removing the update again until a stable version appears seems to be the only option.
