Microsoft Tries Yet Again with Recall

Windows Recall is Back. Microsoft Releases a New Test Version of the Controversial Feature for Windows Insiders. Will It Succeed This Time?

Microsoft Doesn’t Give Up on Recall. After the Feature for Copilot+ PCs Was Put Back on Ice Since December, It’s Rolling Out a New Test Version for Windows Insiders. This Brings a Launch of Recall One Step Closer, If It Can Pass the Exam This Time.

If You Had Forgotten About Recall: It’s a Feature for Windows 11 That Takes Screenshots of Your Screen at Regular Intervals. With the Help of AI, You Can Search the Screenshots for Specific Information. Recall Uses Local AI Computing Power and Is Therefore Exclusive to Copilot+ PCs with a Powerful NPU, Although It’s Not Clear How Many TOPS the Function Requires.

Long Ordeal

What Was Supposed to Be Microsoft’s Flagship for the Copilot+ Label Has So Far Turned into a Long Ordeal. Security Experts Saw Recall as a Potential Privacy Nightmare. Although Recall Screenshots Are Not Shared with the Cloud, They Would Be Stored on Your Device Without Extra Security. Initially, There Was Also No Option to Turn Off Recall.

Microsoft Hasn’t Turned a Deaf Ear to the Criticism and Has Postponed Tests with Recall Multiple Times. In All That Time, However, Microsoft Has Never Given Up. Now It’s Rolling Out a New Test Version via the Windows Insider Test Channel: the Final Exam for Windows Functions. Microsoft Is Implementing Adjusted Security Such as an Opt-in System and PIN Code Protection to Address the Initial Criticism of Recall.

Whether It Will Work This Time with Recall Remains to Be Seen. Very Few Windows Users Have Actually Been Able to Test the Function Yet. The Verge Describes Recall as ‘Creepy, Smart, and Immersive’.

Click to Do

The Beta Release Includes More Than Just Recall. Microsoft Is Testing, Among Other Things, Click to Do, a Copilot+ Function That Suggests Quick Actions Based on Your Screen Content, Such as Removing Objects from Photos. The Windows Search Bar Is Also Getting a Bit Smarter Thanks to Semantic Indexing. You Can Find an Overview Here.
