According to OpenAI’s CEO, GPT-4.5 and GPT-5 would be launched in the coming “weeks/months.”
Late last year, rumors circulated that OpenAI’s new AI model, under the name Orion, would be launched before the end of 2024. OpenAI quickly drew a line under that. Meanwhile, GPT-4.5 and GPT-5 do seem to be getting closer. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman shared a roadmap of GPT-4.5 and GPT-5 at X.
Latest “non-chain-of-thought model”
In a post on X, Altman acknowledges the ambiguity surrounding OpenAI’s product line. The company says it wants to do a “much better job” of simplifying its offerings.
OpenAI has plans to launch GPT-4.5, which was initially called Orion internally. This would be OpenAI’s last “non-chain-of-thought model,” according to Altman. In addition, the long-awaited GPT-5 model had a more difficult development. Initially, for example, it did not seem to meet expectations.
O Series
Furthermore, Altman lets us know that his second goal is to “unifyo-series models and GPT series models by creating systems that can use all of our tools, know when to think long or not, and are generally useful for a wide range of tasks.”

“Both in ChatGPT and in our API, we will release GPT-5 as a system that integrates much of our technology, including o3. We will no longer release o3 as a standalone model,” Altman said.
Altman does not clarify exactly when GPT-4.5 and GPT-5 will come out. He talks about a vague estimate of “weeks/months.”
