ChatGPT provides health advice based on medical records

ChatGPT Health

OpenAI introduces ChatGPT Health, a separate space within ChatGPT for conversations based on health data.

Chances are that you have already consulted ChatGPT for health advice when experiencing an ailment or certain symptoms. You are not the only one, because according to OpenAI, 230 million people worldwide ask the chatbot questions about health and well-being every week.

To address this need, ChatGPT is launching a separate space where you can go with all your health questions. Within this environment, ChatGPT Health offers health advice based on medical records and information from health apps. To stay ahead of privacy watchdogs, ChatGPT states that such data is not used to train models. The rollout will start with a small group of users in the US.

At the doctor’s office

ChatGPT Health will have its own storage for conversations, files, and linked apps. The feature also uses a separate “memory” within this space. OpenAI states that health information will not end up in other chats. At the same time, other conversations will not have access to files or memories from ChatGPT Health.

The company reports that data in ChatGPT is already stored and transmitted in encrypted form. Users can also enable multi-factor authentication via the existing account settings.

Linking with health data

Users can connect electronic patient records and apps to base answers on their own data. OpenAI mentions Apple Health, Function, and MyFitnessPal, among others. For access to records from healthcare providers in the US, OpenAI is working with b.well, a platform for linked health data. OpenAI states that records are only available to users aged 18 and over. Users can remove links at any time via Settings.

ChatGPT Health will initially be available to a small group of paying and free users. The feature is not yet available in Europe, but OpenAI hopes to change this in the coming weeks.
