OpenAI introduces Prism: AI-native workspace for researchers

OpenAI Prism

OpenAI introduces Prism, a cloud-based LaTeX workspace specifically for scientists. The service should simplify and bring together the process of writing and revising papers.

OpenAI launches Prism, a new scientific workspace that is available for free to anyone with a ChatGPT account. The AI-native workspace helps scientists write and collaborate on research, and is powered by GPT-5.2.

Prism combines writing, revision, collaboration, and publication preparation in one cloud-based, LaTeX-native workspace. “Instead of functioning as a separate tool alongside the writing process, GPT‑5.2 works within the project itself, with access to the structure of the document, equations, references, and the surrounding context,” the press release states.

No loss of context

Prism works as a cloud-based, LaTeX-native environment. GPT-5.2 does not run alongside the writing process, but within the project itself. As a result, the model can take into account the structure of the document, equations, references, and surrounding text. This means that researchers lose less context because they no longer have to switch between editors, PDFs, reference tools, and separate chat interfaces.

Within Prism, researchers can chat with GPT-5.2 Thinking to explore ideas and hypotheses, write and revise papers with the full document as context (text, equations, references, images, and structure), look up and process relevant literature such as arXiv sources, and create or rewrite equations, citations, and visuals with an understanding of their interrelationships.

In addition, it can convert whiteboard equations or diagrams to LaTeX, supports real-time collaboration with immediately visible comments, implements changes directly in the document without copying between tools, and offers optional voice-controlled editing for quick adjustments during writing or review.

Based in Crixet

Prism builds on Crixet, a cloud-based LaTeX platform that OpenAI acquired and later merged into a single product. With Prism, OpenAI also wants to lower barriers to installation and environment management, as teams do not need a local LaTeX installation. This should limit version conflicts and manual merges.

Prism is available today for personal accounts. OpenAI reports that the service should also be available soon for organizations with ChatGPT Business, Team, Enterprise, and Education subscriptions.
