Following the acquisition of the Dutch iDIN by itsme, the Belgian identification app is now available in the Netherlands.
The Belgian identification app itsme can now be used in the Netherlands, reports Nu.nl. itsme will take the place of the Dutch identification service iDIN. In the iDIN selection menu, Dutch users will now be able to choose itsme as a login option.
In December last year, itsme acquired iDIN. This acquisition marked the first foreign takeover for the Belgian identification company itsme.
itsme in iDIN
The Dutch identification service iDIN was founded ten years ago by Dutch banks. Until now, the service was primarily used to log in via the bank at insurers or web shops, for example. The Belgian itsme, on the other hand, works with a separate application where you link your identity to the app.
Gradual transition
To ensure a gradual transition, Dutch users will now see the itsme option appear in the iDIN menu. Afterwards, you will be directed to the itsme app to confirm your identification and select your chosen method: facial recognition, code, or fingerprint.
According to the previously communicated schedule, the launch was set to take place in the spring of 2026 and run until 2028. That launch has now begun. All organizations affiliated with iDIN now also offer itsme as a login option. These include PostNL, ASR, and PSV.
Earlier this year, itsme reached the milestone of eight million Belgian users. The app is now available in 30 European countries.
