Belgian identity app itsme is now available throughout Europe

The digital identity app itsme is now available in all 27 countries of the European Union. This allows citizens throughout the EU to remotely verify their identity with organizations that support itsme.

The digital identity app itsme, which originated in Belgium, is now active in 30 countries, including the United Kingdom, Norway, and Iceland. Any EU citizen aged 18 or older can create an account with a passport. In various countries, an identity card or valid residence permit is also sufficient.

Across borders

The expansion is primarily intended to simplify cross-border processes. Truck drivers traveling between member states can use itsme to verify their identity and gain access to ports in Belgium. According to the company, expats can more easily open a bank account in markets where itsme is available, without physical presence or manual passport scans.

itsme has certification at ‘High’ assurance level under eIDAS, the European regulations for electronic identification and trust services. The app is technically prepared for integration with the future European Digital Identity Wallet. This should further enable its use as a generic identification method within Europe.

The platform has more than 7.5 million users and has strong reach in the Belgian market. Earlier this month, the government quietly launched its own identity app to break itsme’s monopoly.
