Google Docs users can now have texts read aloud via a new feature that uses Gemini.
A few months ago, Google announced a new audio feature in Google Docs. Now the company has announced that users can start using this new feature, which can read texts in Google Docs aloud using Gemini. The functionality is currently only available in English and on desktops.
Audio Version of Documents via Gemini
Google is introducing the ability to have documents in Google Docs read aloud using the Gemini assistant. Both authors and readers can now use this feature. Readers get access to a new option in the Tools > Audio menu, which allows them to have a document read aloud.

Authors can also insert a play button into the document via Insert > Audio buttons. The button plays the text of the current tab. Authors can customize the label, color, and size of the button.
The audio recordings use natural voices, and users can set the voice choice and playback speed. According to Google, the feature can help with processing information or detecting typos in the text.
English Only
The feature is currently only available for English-language documents on desktops. Within Google Workspace, the feature will be available to customers with certain licenses, including Business Standard and Plus, Enterprise Standard and Plus, and for customers with the Gemini Business or Enterprise add-on.
Users must enable “smart features and personalization” to access Gemini in the side panel of Workspace apps. Administrators can activate this centrally through the Admin Console.
The rollout begins on August 18, 2025, for users with a Rapid Release domain. For domains with a scheduled release, the rollout will follow from August 25, 2025.
