Ubiquiti Introduces UniFi OS for On-Premises Servers

Ubiquiti brings its management and control layer to on-premises servers with the introduction of UniFi OS Server.

Managed service providers and IT teams can now host the entire UniFi network stack themselves via UniFi OS Server. With UniFi OS Server, administrators can install the central control layer of their UniFi network on their own servers. This contrasts with the standard version of UniFi, which runs in the cloud and is based on a licensing model.

The new software runs in a container environment and is designed to manage multiple client locations from a single central installation. UniFi OS Server supports both the x86 (and x64) and ARM64 architectures at launch.

The Same Features as in the Cloud

Self-hosting in this case does not mean losing features, Ubiquiti emphasizes. The server software provides access to the latest additions to the UniFi ecosystem. For example, there are features like InnerSpace, which performs environmental and RF analyses, and Site Magic SD-WAN for robust mesh configurations. Central firmware updates and zero trust identity management are also included.

The UniFi OS Server operates independently of an internet connection. This allows for local adjustments without delay, but more importantly, it guarantees complete independence from external infrastructure. The software keeps configurations and telemetry close to the physical network infrastructure.

UniFi Site Manager offers a central overview dashboard for multiple locations. This layer provides centralized dashboards, SD-WAN orchestration, and audit logs, while maintaining local autonomy.

For MSPs and Businesses

Ubiquiti targets this solution at MSPs and organizations that want to manage their infrastructure themselves, without obligations related to subscription models. UniFi OS Server supports existing DevOps pipelines and CI/CD workflows, and allows data storage to remain within national borders or on-premises, depending on compliance requirements.

On-premises management also brings additional control. This adds value for users who were deterred by an incident in 2023, when Ubiquiti users suddenly gained access to other users’ devices via the UniFi cloud service.

Ubiquiti makes UniFi OS immediately available in early access.
