Anthropic expands AI agent Claude to office work with Cowork

Anthropic introduces Cowork: an AI agent for non-technical employees.

Anthropic wants to make its AI assistant Claude less exclusive to developers. The company introduces Cowork, a new feature that makes agentic AI tasks accessible to broader knowledge work, such as administration, reporting, and file management.

From code to office

Cowork is based on the same technology as Claude Code and is integrated into the Claude desktop app for macOS. Users can give Claude access to a specific folder on their computer and then give commands in plain language. These commands range from automatically filling in expense reports based on photos of receipts to writing reports from loose notes or restructuring messy folders.

Many of these types of tasks were technically already possible with Claude Code, but required more knowledge and setup. With Cowork, Anthropic is explicitly targeting non-technical knowledge workers, such as marketers, consultants, and administrative staff.

Ease of use with risks

Cowork offers some advantages known from Claude Code, such as adjusting commands in the interim while the task is still running. At the same time, Anthropic itself points out risks. Unclear prompts can lead to unwanted actions, such as deleting files. In addition, prompt injection remains a difficult problem to solve, especially for less experienced users.

Therefore, Cowork is currently only available as a research preview for Max subscribers. Anthropic has not yet communicated when a broader rollout will take place.
