Synology Expands Its NAS Portfolio with Two New Models: DS1825+ and DS1525+. Both Are Aimed at SMEs and Professional Users and Continue the Line Regarding the Limitation of Original Synology Hard Drives.
The Synology DS1825+ and DS1525+ Come Standard with Two 2.5GbE Network Ports. The DS1525+ Is Expandable with an Optional 10GbE Module, While the DS1825+ Contains a PCIe 3.0 Slot That Supports Network Cards up to 25GbE. Both Devices Offer Two M.2 Slots for Creating an SSD Cache or Full Flash Storage Volume.
According to Performance Tests, the Synology DS1825+ Achieves a Throughput of up to 2,239 MB/s for Reading and 1,573 MB/s for Writing with SSDs. The Synology DS1525+ Reaches up to 1,181 MB/s Reading and 1,180 MB/s Writing. Both Models Support Expansion with up to Two Synology DX525 Five-Disk Units. This Increases the Storage Capacity to 300 TB on the DS1525+ and 360 TB on the DS1825+, with 15 and 18 Disks Respectively.

Synology Provides a Compatibility List That Exclusively Consists of Its Own Drives. All “plus” NAS Systems from Now on Will Be Limited in Terms of Drive Compatibility. Synology Follows the Line of the DS925+ That Was Already Released Earlier This Year.
At This Moment, There Is No Place for NAS Drives from Other Brands. If You Insert a Different Drive into the NAS, the System Goes into Warning Mode, Access to Certain Functions Is Artificially Denied, and You Receive No Support. Synology Justifies This Choice by Delivering More Reliable Performance with Its Own Hard Drives. It Maintains Control over Future Firmware Updates, Something That Has Caused Some Systems to Crash in the Past, Says the Brand.
Those Migrating from an Earlier Synology NAS Can Still Bring Their “old” Hard Drives. Expanding the Storage Pool Afterwards Can Only Be Done with Synology Disks. A New Start Must Be Made with Synology Disks.
