Motorola releases two new ‘flipphones’. The Razr 60 devices come with refreshed hardware and fully embrace the AI trend.

In 2022, Motorola brought its first foldable smartphone to Europe, and with the Razr 60 and 60 Ultra, we’ve already reached the fourth generation. Each year, Motorola takes a step forward, but last year’s Razr 50 still had noticeable shortcomings. Is the Razr 60 the bullseye for Motorola?

The Razr 60 generation consists of two models. With the Razr 60 Ultra, Motorola pulls out all the stops, while the Razr 60 is intended to bring foldable phones to a more affordable price level. Motorola doesn’t shy away from superlatives, boldly calling the Razr 60 Ultra ‘the most powerful foldable in the world’, along with references to AI.

Alcantara

The Motorola Razr 60 will immediately catch everyone’s attention when you walk down the street with it. Not only because the design looks very similar to Samsung’s Galaxy Flip devices, but also because of the creative materials and colors Motorola uses. The Razr 60 Ultra is available in four finishes: wood, vegan leather, satin, and Alcantara. Motorola also goes all out with colors: Mountain Trail, Parfait Pink and Gibraltar Sea are some of the options.

The device feels sturdy thanks to a new titanium-reinforced hinge plate, which Motorola claims will survive 35 percent more folds than the previous generation. The design allows for minimal openings, and integrated brush filters should protect the device against dust. The IP48 rating means you can submerge the device in water for 30 minutes.

When unfolded, the Motorola Razr 60 Ultra offers a 7-inch screen, while the Razr 60 measures 6.9 inches. The smaller screen on the front measures 4 inches on the Ultra model and 3.6 inches on the Razr 60. The smaller screen allows you to view notifications or respond to messages without having to open your phone, and it assists you in taking photos.

More Power, Better Condition

The Razr 60 devices aim to address the last pain points of the previous generations. One of our biggest criticisms of the Razr 50 was its internals, which were subpar for a premium device. This should no longer be an issue with the Razr 60: Motorola confidently claims that the Ultra version is ‘the most powerful foldable’ in the world.

Motorola supports this bold claim with the presence of the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8s Gen 3 Elite chipset in the device, which is indeed a very powerful chip. Whether this claim will hold up when other foldable devices with the same processors hit the market remains to be seen. The Razr 60 comes with a MediaTek Dimensity 7400X.

Another pain point for foldable devices is battery life, especially with this design as there’s less room for a large battery. The 4700 mAh and 4500 mAh batteries in the two devices don’t sound impressive on paper, but Motorola hopes that the architecture of the processors can make a difference. The Razr 60 Ultra can be charged quickly with a 68W charging capacity, while the Razr 60 charges at 30W. Wireless charging is possible up to 30W and 15W.

The Razr 60 Ultra offers a triple 50 MP camera system, which Motorola proudly describes as a world first for flip phones. In addition to a main camera, you get a wide-angle lens and front camera with the same resolution, replacing the zoom camera. The Razr 60 has a dual 50 MP camera with a 13 MP wide-angle camera.

AI Overdose

We’ve been able to delay it for a long time, but with new smartphones, you can’t avoid AI. Motorola’s announcement is, as is the rule today, peppered with references to AI functions. The Razr 60 Ultra will even have an ‘AI button’ to help you discover these features more quickly. Motorola combines its own AI functions, which are shipped as ‘Moto AI 2.0’, together with the (mandatory) presence of Google’s Gemini.

Those hoping that Motorola is equally generous with updates will be disappointed. 4 years of security updates for a premium device is quite underwhelming.

The Razr 60 devices are immediately available for 799 euros or 1,299 euros, including VAT.
