Microsoft wants to install Windows 11 updates when there is enough sunlight or wind

The latest test version of Windows 11 includes a feature that installs Windows updates when there is mostly renewable power on the grid.

Windows Insiders, beta testers of Windows 11, can recently get started with Windows 11 Preview build 22567. In it, as expected, are numerous bug fixes and new ideas. One of them immediately caught our eye: “Windows Update is determined to help reduce carbon emissions.

Microsoft is working with electricityMap and WattTime to schedule updates when CO2 emissions and the associated environmental impact are minimal. Maps of Belgium, the Netherlands and most of Europe are available, so the feature can be tested in our area as well.

The Windows Insider team clarified, “Most power grids are powered by multiple sources including renewable and fossil fuels. When possible, Windows 11 will now schedule the installation of updates in the background when large amounts of clean energy sources (wind, solar, hydro) are available.”

A new Windows feature is always tested by beta testers first. Depending on their feedback, Microsoft decides whether the feature will later be rolled out to all stable Windows 11 versions.

Today, one in five PCs is running Windows 11. That number will thicken significantly in the coming period as every new device sold runs the operating system. Soon Android support will also roll out to all users, with or without hefty system requirements. Those who have yet to update from Windows 10 should first double-check that their device is compatible with Windows 11.
