Android apps in Windows 11 get tough system requirements

Windows 11 Amazon Appstore

Windows 11 supports Android apps thanks to the integrated Amazon App Store, but you need a powerful and relatively new PC for that.

Microsoft has put the support page live with minimum and recommended system requirements to run Android apps within Windows 11. Your PC must meet these parameters:

  • Memory: 8 GB RAM (minimum), 16 GB RAM (recommended)
  • Storage: Solid State Drive (SSD)
  • Processor: Intel Core i3 8th Gen or higher, AMD Ryzen 3000 or higher, Qualcomm Snapdragon 8c or higher
  • Processor architecture: x64 or ARM64
  • Virtual Machine Platform: you need to enable this setting on your PC

Two things stand out immediately, namely the high memory and processor requirements. 8 GB of RAM is the bare minimum for light Android apps. For now, it is not clear where the line lies between a good experience with 8 GB RAM with certain apps, and which ones need 16 GB RAM to work optimally.

High processor requirements

Microsoft also places high demands on the processor side to run Android apps. The minimum is an 8th-generation Intel Core i3 that saw the light of day in 2017. Those with AMD in their PC should have a more recent machine. A 2019 AMD Ryzen 3000 chip is the minimum.

It is extraordinary that Microsoft requires such a recent AMD chip because the performance between Ryzen 2000 chips and the newer Ryzen 3000 chips differs relatively little. Possibly additional technology in the newer AMD chips is important to smoothly run Android apps.

Before you can get started with the Android apps, you have to install Windows 11 anyway. Microsoft has not yet relaxed the strict hardware requirements from at launch, nor does it seem to have any plans to do so. To make the move to Windows 11, you first and foremost need a minimum amount of processing power. A dual core processor with a clock speed of 1 GHz, 4 GB of RAM and 64 GB of storage are the lower limit. Next, you need some lesser-known specifications such as TPM and UEFI.
