MediaTek showcases the Kompanio Ultra 910 processor for Chromebooks. With 50 TOPS of AI computing power, the processor would meet the Microsoft Copilot+ label requirements.
The Kompanio Ultra 910 is the latest flagship from MediaTek’s stack. While the processor maker doesn’t compete in the Windows PC market, it is an important supplier for Chromebooks. The new Kompanio Ultra 910 aims to bring Chromebook Plus devices to the same level as the famous AI PCs for Windows.
MediaTek fabricates the Kompanio Ultra 910 on a 3 nm process using ARM architecture. The chip consists of eight cores, including one Arm Cortex-X925 with a maximum clock speed of up to 3.62 GHz. By using a fully big-core architecture, MediaTek aims for high performance without compromising battery life, enabling longer battery life for Chromebooks. It’s in the NPU
The CPU and GPU, although handling the most important tasks, are no longer the most crucial components for chip makers. It seems that nowadays, your processor only truly competes if the NPU is powerful enough. This is not an issue for the MediaTek Ultra 910, which features an NPU with 50 TOPS of AI processing power. The chip would thus meet the limit imposed by Microsoft for Copilot+ PCs (40 TOPS), if it weren’t exclusive to Windows.
MediaTek states in the press release that the chip was developed in collaboration with Google to deliver optimized (AI) performance on Chromebooks. With the NPU, AI applications can be run locally, although there are currently few functions that effectively utilize this. For AI functions requiring internet, the processor is compatible with Wi-Fi 7.
In case you were wondering: the AI craze in the PC market has also fully transferred to Chromebooks. Google launched the Chromebook Plus label at the end of 2023 to distinguish high-end devices. The Plus devices have access to unique AI features from Google Gemini. The new MediaTek processor ensures that these can run without an internet connection.
