MediaTek is targeting the most expensive smartphone models with the Dimensity 9400. The processor is ready for the latest technological gadgets, such as agentic AI.

MediaTek, Qualcomm’s challenger in the smartphone industry, has presented its latest processor Dimensity 9400. The processor is intended for flagship smartphones that will be released next year. In that class, it should compete with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 4, whose announcement is also expected this month.

The CPU has eight cores. The most powerful core is one ArmCortex-X925 (3.62 GHz), assisted by four Arm Cortex-X4 and three Cortex-A720 cores. MediaTek claims the Dimensity 9400 delivers up to 35 percent better per-core performance than its predecessor Dimensity 9300, and 28 percent higher multi-core performance. The chip should also be up to 40 percent more energy efficient.

Ready for agentic AI

In addition to a CPU, the core is also equipped with a 12-core Immortalis-G925 GPU for graphics work. We live in the AI era and so the mention of an NPU is mandatory. The neural processing unit in the processor was designed by MediaTek itself and can run smaller AI models on the device without having to go to the cloud. The device is thus ready for the latest trend in technology land, according to MediaTek: agentic AI.

MediaTek apparently also expects a breakthrough of “three-leaf” phones. This new type of foldable phone folds open like a brochure. Huawei, among others, already showed a concept phone in this style, although we would be surprised if we were to see the first commercial models as early as 2025. In any case, the MediaTek Dimensity 9400 is designed to adapt to this type of folding line.

By the way, the chances of buying a phone with a MediaTek Dimensity 9400 are not that great either. Chinese smartphone brands may well use the processor, but for devices they launch in their own market. For Europe, manufacturers typically swear by Qualcomm.
