HP revamps Dragonfly laptops and launches Chromebook variant

HP is revamping its Dragonfly laptops within the business segment, adding a Chromebook variant to the lineup for the first time.

Those who like to walk around the office in style are presumably looking at HP’s Dragonfly laptops. For 2022, the manufacturer is launching two new Dragonfly models at CES. The most obvious upgrade is the HP Elite Dragonfly G3, the successor to last year’s G2.

The biggest innovation is undoubtedly the taller screen with a 3:2 aspect ratio for greater productivity. Today, the Dragonfly G2 uses a traditional 16:9 screen. Yet another interesting evolution of the HP Elite Dragonfly G3 is the loss of the 360-degree hinge. The latest version is a traditional clamshell model.

Other specifications include the latest 12th-generation Intel chips with vPro support, up to 32 GB of RAM and up to 2 TB of SSD storage. The battery measures 68 Wh, which is quite a lot considering its thin profile. The device weighs less than 1kg with the smaller 45 Wh battery variant.

Chromebook variant

The biggest surprise is undoubtedly the HP Elite Dragonfly Chromebook. With it, the manufacturer brings Chrome OS to the premium segment for the first time. This laptop has a more traditional 16:9 screen ratio and can be configured with a 12th-generation Intel chip, up to 32 GB of RAM and up to 512 GB of SSD storage. Unlike the new Dragonfly G3, the Chromebook variant does have a 360-degree hinge for optimal touch-screen control of Chrome OS.

The HP Elite Dragonfly Chromebook has two firsts on board. It is the first-ever Chromebook with a haptic trackpad and the first to support Intel’s vPro platform. Other luxury features that are often a rarity on Chromebooks include a fingerprint sensor and a built-in privacy screen.

Focus on better video calls

Under the name HP Presence, both the HP Elite Dragonfly Chromebook and the HP Elite Dragonfly G3 get a 5 megapixel webcam on board. The high recording resolution allows an AI application to conveniently capture you as a participant in an optimal central view, even as you walk around. Furthermore, both devices include AI filters to suppress background noise and better pick up your voice.

The HP Elite Dragonfly G3 is expected on U.S. store shelves starting in March. The HP Elite Dragonfly Chromebook will follow a month later in April. When both devices will be available in our country is not yet known. HP is also not giving a suggested retail price for now.
