The latest Chrome update, version M99, sets speed records and surpasses Apples own Safari browser in benchmarks.

In an extensive blog post, Google points out the various optimizations in rendering graphics and compiling JavaScript to perform better. According to Google, Chrome today outperforms Safari by 7 percent within a speed benchmark developed by Apples own WebKit team.

Google conducted the test on a MacBook Pro with a 10-core M1 Max chip and 64 GB of RAM. Ideally, the search giant could have tested multiple configurations to also analyze the impact of less RAM.

Speed is important, but it is not the only parameter that matters. Especially with laptops, energy efficiency is even more important, something Google is silent on. Those who run Chrome on their Mac today and are satisfied with it may continue to do so. The same goes for Safari users as well. It never hurts to test a competing product when you can do so for free. You never know what you may (or may not) be missing.
