The first major update for Windows 11 has been available since Feb. 15. All users of the operating system can install the update, no need to be in the test program to do so.
Microsoft releases the first major update for Windows 11. Belgian Windows 11 users will see changes to Notepad, Media Player and the taskbar. The update is installable for all Windows 11 users.
No Android apps
Support for Android apps promised to be the most important part of the update for many. However, the public preview will only be rolled out in the US, Panos Panay, Chief Product Officer at Windows, announced in a blog post.
The public preview allows U.S. users of Windows 11 to install apps from the Amazon App Store. Amazon’s App Store has fewer applications than Google’s Play Store. The support is still a preview, but Panay said it reinforces Microsoft’s commitment to being the most open platform for developers.
For now, it remains to be seen when Android apps will become available to other users in Windows 11. Panay indicated only that the rollout will be discussed in detail later this year.
Taskbar
Microsoft additionally tinkered further with the taskbar. The date and time are visible on remote monitors due to the update. The weather view also gets a place in the taskbar, found in the lower left corner from now on.
Furthermore, the taskbar has more functionality during video meetings in Teams. During a meeting, a button is available to easily mute your microphone.
From now on, sharing a window within Microsoft Teams will also be done via the taskbar.
Applications
In Notepad, it is now possible to undo multiple edits. In addition, the app gets more search capabilities and a dark mode is available.
Media Player has been transformed and replaces both Groove Music and Windows Media Player. The application supports both video and audio.
