Dell announces a 14-inch and 16-inch laptop and attaches the word “Premium” to them. The Dell 14 and 16 Premium keep the memory of the XPS series alive.

Dell announces two new business laptops today. The devices follow the new and much-discussed naming scheme that Dell has been using since this year. Laptops that simply get the name “Dell” are intended for a broad audience and are positioned below the Pro and Pro Max series for the business market. “Premium” stands for higher specifications.

What’s in a name: everything must be Pro, Max or Ultra

Those more familiar with Dell’s old brand names will recognize the devices as successors to the former XPS series. Apart from a new name and a processor refresh, the new devices introduce few changes.

Two Sizes and Weights

The Dell Premium series that appears today – we hereby definitively bury the XPS name – includes two models: a 14.5-inch and a 16.3-inch version. Thin screen edges maximize the screen area without having to increase the device’s dimensions.

The (optional) OLED screen offers a resolution up to 4K for the Dell Premium 16 and 3.2K for the Premium 14, with a refresh rate up to 120 Hz, deeper blacks and vibrant colors. Those with a phobia of blue light will be pleased with the presence of EyeSafe technology. The laptops are also available with LCD screens.

No Copilot+, but Windows 11

Dell Premium 16 is the strongest of the two. In its most powerful configuration, the laptop contains an Intel Core Ultra 9 285H, 64 GB RAM and an Nvidia GeForce RTX 5070 GPU. At launch, the laptop is available with an RTX 5060. The latest Dell is up-to-date with Thunderbolt 5 and Wifi 7.

According to Dell, you can watch Netflix for up to 27 hours on a single battery charge with an LCD screen and up to 9 hours with an OLED screen. A “don’t-try-this-at-home” warning is appropriate here: your brain and eyes won’t last that long.

The 14(.5) inch version is equipped with an Intel Core Ultra 7 255H or 265H and has an integrated Arc GPU. An RTX 4050 card from Nvidia is also possible. The battery can last up to 20 hours of video content. Thunderbolt 5 and Wifi 7 are absent.

AI enthusiasts will be disappointed with the AI Boost NPU that Intel provides. At 13 TOPS, it falls far below the threshold set by Microsoft to get the “AI PC” label. This shows that the Dell Premium devices (without Pro) are not exclusively intended for the business market, where it’s now mandatory to stamp your product with an AI label. Of course, you still have web access to AI applications, and the presence of Windows 11 suddenly counts as a selling point again during the last months of Windows 10.

Dell has not yet communicated prices and launch dates for the European market. In the United States, the 14 Premium costs $1,649 and the 16 Premium $2,699.
