The Windows Recall test version appeared and disappeared. A recent non-security preview is causing problems with the test version of Recall.

For a very brief moment, things finally seemed to be moving forward with Microsoft’s long-awaited Recall feature. A few days ago, Windows 11 testers who have a Copilot+ PC with Qualcomm Snapdragon X chip were able to get started with the Recall feature, provided they signed up for Windows Insider. But as it has always been the case with Recall, a new problem surfaced.

Some Windows Insiders were unable to get the Recall preview to work due to a non-security preview (KB5046740) released Nov. 21. Microsoft now advises users not to install the preview update before joining the Dev Channel until the problem is fixed in a future update.

Coming and going (quickly again)

The problem with the Recall feature for test users occurs with users who installed the preview update (KB5046740), saw the Recall feature appear, joined the Windows Insider Dev channel to work with the code, only to be unable to do anything with it afterwards.

Microsoft’s advice: “We recommend that you do not install this preview update before joining the Dev Channel until we fix the issue in a future update.”

New reprieve for Windows Recall

Recall has long been in the pipeline at Microsoft. This feature takes screenshots of your PC on a regular basis, so you can use an AI-driven search function to look up targeted information in those screenshots. That, of course, was quickly criticized over its privacy nature. A lot of Windows 11 testers were waiting a long time for this test version to see what Microsoft had baked out of it after the criticism, but will have to wait again for another update.
