Windows Security Patch Disrupts App Installation

windows 11

Installing a recent Windows security patch can cause problems with app installations. Microsoft shares a temporary solution.

Microsoft acknowledges an issue with the August security update for Windows. After installing the update, users without admin rights are seeing unintended User Account Control prompts, a security feature that has been built into Windows since Vista.

The issue affects supported Windows 11, Windows 10, and Windows Server versions (2025 and 2022).

Overzealous Checks

The prompts are a result of a security patch Microsoft implemented in Windows last month. The patch closes a vulnerability that could give intruders elevated privileges. Microsoft addressed this by making Windows more stringent in checking user rights, but this is also happening in situations where it’s not desired.

Microsoft lists several actions that may be hindered by User Account Control:

  • Executing repair commands
  • Launching Autodesk applications
  • Installing applications that configure themselves per user
  • Running Windows Installer during Active Setup
  • Deploying packages via Configuration Manager that depend on user-specific configurations
  • Enabling Secure Desktop

Temporary solution

Microsoft is working on a solution to this problem. The next monthly security update is scheduled for Tuesday, September 9. Until then, Microsoft recommends installing apps with admin rights where possible. If that’s not possible, temporarily rolling back the update button is the last resort.

Disappearing SSDs

Microsoft also addresses one last time reports that the latest Windows update would cause SSDs and hard drives to ‘disappear’. According to Microsoft, this is not a result of the update. This is supported by a report from disk manufacturer Phison, which claims to have performed more than 2,000 tests without making a disk disappear. The mystery thus remains unsolved.
