Windows 11 Update Triggers False Alarm in Event Viewer

The last two monthly security updates for Windows 11 are behaving strangely. The July update shows false error messages, while the August update faces installation issues.

Update issues are a monthly occurrence for Windows users. This month, Microsoft reports two problems with the latest security updates. Both the July and August security updates are not behaving as they should. Those who have not yet applied the July update and perform a cumulative update may face double trouble.

False Alarm

Microsoft already reported on Monday about a bug with KB5062660, the Windows update rolled out in July. Upon installation of the update, an error message appears in the Windows Event Viewer. The message indicates that the Microsoft Pluton Cryptographic Provider could not be loaded.

Microsoft emphasizes that this does not affect the functioning of Windows. The error message points to a feature still in development, whose code accidentally ended up in a production version of Windows. The advice: simply ignore it.

Installation Issues

The second issue is that installation of the KB5063878 update, released this week, may fail via Windows Server Update Services. IT administrators see error code 0x80240069 when installing. The issue only occurs in business environments where WSUS is actively used and does not affect devices with a Home license.

To temporarily resolve the issue, IT teams can perform a “rollback”. Microsoft has made an adjusted group policy available for this, which can be applied to managed devices to circumvent the issue. The policy settings can be downloaded from Microsoft and must be manually configured via the management console. Of course, you can also manually install the update if the automatic route does not work.

Meanwhile, Microsoft is working on a permanent solution to roll out with a follow-up update. Both issues only impact Windows 11 version 24H2. It will be the only supported Windows 11 version from November, unless the 25H2 update is released by then.
