Windows 11 Update Breaks DRM Video Playback

Blu-ray and DVDs with DRM protection no longer work after the optional August Windows update.

According to Microsoft, the August 24H2 update causes issues when playing DRM-protected content.

Optional Update

The Windows 11 24H2 update brings new features but also problems. Microsoft confirms that playing content with DRM protection in digital TV, Blu-ray, and DVD apps is affected by the KB5064081 update from August. Users who have installed the September KB5065426 update may also experience issues.

When playing a movie on their PC, users may encounter a copyright error message or a black screen. Subsequently, the movie may stutter or freeze and stop playing. This is due to the outdated ‘enhanced video rendering’ (EVR) function in certain apps required to play content with DRM or HDCP protection. Fortunately, the update is not mandatory, and users can postpone the installation if needed.

Solution in the Works

Microsoft says it is currently working on a solution that will be released in a future Windows 11 update. More information will follow as soon as it’s available. In the meantime, users can switch to alternative DVD and/or Blu-ray players. Since only apps are affected, switching to streaming services is also an option.
