Microsoft tests new ‘copy as table’ feature in Snippet program

Microsoft is testing a new feature to easily copy table data in Windows 11’s Snippet program.

The Windows 11 Snipping Tool, or the Snipping Program, will soon get a little smarter and make your job easier. Namely, the Snipping Tool will be able to recognize when you’re copying data from rows and columns, such as in a spreadsheet, and take on the formatting accordingly. The update is part of a Windows 11 Dev Channel release and is currently still in the testing phase.

Smarter copying

The Clipping utility in Windows 11 is a handy tool for copying text from images or redacting sensitive information, for example. Now Windows announces via its Insider Blog that it is adding a new feature: “Copy as Table. This feature allows users to easily copy structured table data into an e-mail, document or spreadsheet.

The “Copy as Table” function is easy to use. You take a screenshot of the table data, then select Text actions and then Copy as table. Afterwards, you can paste the structured table data. Windows reports that the current implementation of the function works best when you take a screenshot of just one table.

The new update will be added to version 11.2409.22.0 of the Snippet program in conjunction with the Windows 11 Insider Preview Build 26120.2122 (Dev Channel). So it is not yet guaranteed to be released with the next updates for Windows.
