Those who don’t want to update to Windows 11 24H2 will feel. Microsoft is treating users of older Windows 11 versions to a forced installation that may take more than an hour.
The Windows 11 24H2 update has been available since Oct. 1. Microsoft believes it has given enough time to do the update itself and is going to force installation if you haven’t already done so. “We have reached a new stage in the phased rollout of version 24H2,” Microsoft writes on its Windows update status page.
The forced update applies only to devices that would still be running Windows 11 23H2 or 22H2. The 22H2 version of Windows 11 has not been supported since October, and that applies to 23H2 as of October this year. On managed devices, the update will not be enforced.
Please be patient
Users are given the option to schedule the update at a time that suits them best. That’s not a luxury, as Windows 11 24H2 is not an update you’ll do quickly over coffee. According to PCWorld, the update can take one to two hours.
Windows 11 24H2 introduces a lot of new features, such as Wifi 7 compatibility and, like it or not, deeper AI integration into the operating system. A “full OS swap” takes place during installation, according to Microsoft’s words.

If you don’t want to be surprised by an automatic update at an unscheduled time, you can still install Windows 11 24H2 manually. Via the Windows Updatemenu in the settings, you can check what version you are on and if there are any new updates ready. The latest version should be available on all compatible devices.
Last year’s major Windows update got off to a disastrous start. Users who got there early were plagued with blue screens and other unpleasant surprises. The problems have been solved step by step by Microsoft so it now wants to roll out Windows 11 24H2 more widely.
