The chat app aims to enable conversations without both parties needing an account.
WhatsApp is working on a new feature that allows users to send messages to people without a WhatsApp account, writes WABetaInfo. The option, called “guest chats”, appeared in the Android beta 2.25.22.13 and is expected later this year.
Temporary Chat without Installation
With guest chats, users can send a personal link to someone who doesn’t use the app. The recipient opens a one-on-one conversation in the browser via that link, without registration or app installation. According to WhatsApp, these conversations are also protected with end-to-end encryption.
The feature is currently limited to text messages. Photo “s, video” s, voice messages, and group chats are not supported. Calling is also not possible. Guest chats are intended as temporary conversations, not as a full-fledged alternative to an account.
Separate from Interoperability
WhatsApp is developing the feature entirely within its own ecosystem. This distinguishes guest chats from third-party apps, where external apps like Signal or Telegram can communicate with WhatsApp via European regulations.
With guest chats, WhatsApp may aim to persuade people who deliberately do not use the app. The low entry barrier allows non-users to easily and securely participate in a conversation. When the feature will be more widely rolled out is still unknown.
