Qnap NAS update broke devices

Qnap has withdrawn a software update for its NAS appliances after it caused problems for users. Some users now have to manually reinstall their OS, while others are facing bigger glitches and cannot even log in.

Qnap launched an unstable version of its QTS operating system with QTS 5.2.2.2950 build 20241114. After feedback from users, the NAS specialist withdrew that update and posted a stable version online within 24 hours. Only, for some users, the harm was already done.

Affected devices

The original update caused issues for the following devices in the TS-x53D and TS-x51 series: the HS-453DX, TBS-453DX, TS-251D, TS-253D, TS-653D, TS-453D, TS-453Dmini, TS-451D and the TS-451D2. Several functions of the NAS would not work after installation.

Those affected can fix the problems by manually reinstalling the repaired version of the NAS software. This can be done by downloading the update from Qnap’s Download Center. Then navigate to System and Firmware Update to select the Manual installation Select.

Not logging in anymore

Unfortunately, that no longer seems to be an option for some other users. The Register reports that several customers can no longer log in to their NAS. They appear to have manually reset the device after experiencing problems with the new update. After that reset, their account information no longer works.

Qnap itself indicates that affected users should either install the updated update or contact customer support in cash. However, users in turn indicate that customer support is not as responsive at this time. What the solution is for those who can no longer log in is unclear at this time.

Qnap users do get a few things. The manufacturer struggles from time to time with bugs and vulnerabilities, and criminals are only too happy to jump on them. Fast patching is usually the golden advice, but now it is precisely this sensible practice that is causing the biggest problems. Qnap is in danger of eroding users’ trust in updates, which could have serious long-term consequences.
