Perplexity launches Teammates. The AI solution takes over ongoing work from users.
AI company Perplexity is launching Teammates. With Perplexity Teammates, a user gives an AI agent a responsibility, such as managing a growth campaign or researching a new market. The agent plans the tasks itself and keeps working until the result is ready for review.
Teammates is part of Perplexity Computer, which the company launched in February. Computer breaks an assignment down into tasks and has subagents carry them out, each with the AI model that best suits its task. Teammates extends that with agents that manage a task on an ongoing basis.
AI colleague
It is easy to draw a link with a constantly available colleague or assistant. Each teammate also gets its own desktop and browser. The agents start from the projects, memory, skills and connectors that the user already has in Perplexity, with the same permissions. If the workload grows, a teammate brings in extra agents. They learn from feedback.
Teammates also works in Slack, where an agent follows a channel and steps in on its own when something changes. The agents run around the clock in the background and report back when a decision is needed. At Perplexity itself, they sort bug reports, monitor security and run A/B tests.
Answer to Dots and Duet
OpenAI already offers Dots in ChatGPT, assistants that keep track of project context and come back when they need input. In October, Anthropic launched a preview of Claude Duet, a proactive agent that runs on its own virtual machine and takes over the memory, skills and linked apps from the Claude account.
During a promotional period tied to the launch, Teammates is included free in every Max subscription, but that will not last. After the trial period, the agents use up the monthly credits that already come with Max, so the solution can end up costing more than planned. Perplexity Max costs 167 dollars per month, billed annually.
