Microsoft Confuses Windows 10 ESU Users with End-Of-Support Notifications

Microsoft is giving Windows 10 users notifications about the end of security updates, even when they have subscribed to extended support.

Microsoft has stopped supporting Windows 10 and is notifying users through warnings. However, these warnings are creating additional confusion, as they are also reaching users who are still secure.

Those working on Windows 10 Enterprise LTSC 2021 or Windows 10 IoT Enterprise LTSC still receive support until January 2032 and 2029 respectively. Users with Windows 10 22H2 (Pro, Education, or Enterprise) theoretically no longer have the right to updates, unless they have subscribed to Microsoft’s Extended Security Updates (ESU) program.

Incorrect Notification

However, Microsoft is now also serving the warnings to the target group with longer support, and people who have an active ESU license running. This mainly causes confusion, since updates are indeed available for those who are still entitled to them.

In settings and Windows Update, Microsoft incorrectly shows that the current version of Windows no longer receives support and that message remains for a while. In a subsequent update, which does indeed reach those entitled to it, the message will be removed.

Confusing Timing

The confusing warning comes at a difficult time. Over the past month, individual Windows 10 users in the EU have been given the opportunity to sign up for free ESU updates. This is the first time Microsoft has made ESU available to end users in this way. The notification makes it seem as if that registration was not successful. This also applies to Windows 10 in businesses, where systems are registered for paid ESU.
