Microsoft Outlook crashes when copying text into mail

Microsoft Outlook crashes when users want to select text with Ctrl+C. Microsoft offers a temporary fix.

A new bug has been popping up in the Microsoft 365 version of Outlook since last week. When users select text in a classic Outlook email and use Ctrl+C, Outlook crashes. Microsoft released a new support page last week showing how to fix this problem.

Ctrl+C = crash

Are you using the current Channel version 2409 (build 18025.20096) of the classic version of Outlook? Then you may have discovered this problem as well. Namely, the Outlook app crashes when copying text with the keyboard shortcut Ctrl+C. This problem is most common among users who use languages with an IME (Input Method Editor).

Microsoft is currently working on a final solution, but is offering temporary fixes in the meantime. On Microsoft’s support page, the company explains two different solutions. One is to revert to an earlier version of an IME. How to do this, Microsoft explains on this page.

A second option is to restore Outlook itself to a version older than 2409. To do this, go to the Update History in Microsoft 365 appsto change Outlook to the previous version 2408. You can also follow the steps below:

  • Open a command prompt with administrator privileges by right-clicking the menu button Start and selecting Terminal (Admin) click.
  • Type or paste the two commands below into the prompt window and press Enter after each entry:
  • cd %programfiles% common files microsoft shared clickToRun
  • officec2rclient.exe /update user updatetoversion=16.0.17928.20156

This is not the first time bugs have appeared in Outlook. Recently, users with more than five hundred folders experienced problems sending mail with Outlook for a long time. This problem already dragged on for a year, but Microsoft released an update in October. When the company will come out with a final fix for the current problem is not yet clear.
