Microsoft’s Copilot key, which appeared on some keyboards two years ago, will soon be remappable.
In 2024, Microsoft Surface laptops featured a Copilot key that allows users to summon the Copilot assistant with a single keystroke. Later, this key also became a requirement on all Windows laptops, appearing to the right of the space bar. The Copilot key quickly caused a lot of frustration for users who rely on keyboard shortcuts. Therefore, Microsoft is soon launching a Windows 11 update that lets users decide for themselves which function the Copilot key gets, although the options are limited.
New setting
With the upcoming Windows 11 update, an option to remap the Copilot key will appear in Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Keyboard. Users can then choose whether this key should function as a right Ctrl or as a context menu key. This offers more flexibility, especially for those who use workflows or assistive technologies intensively.
Microsoft points out that the behavior of the Copilot key does not have to be identical on all devices. Manufacturers decide for themselves how their keyboard is laid out and how firmware and hardware are configured. Those whose devices already offer their own settings for customizing the Copilot key should choose between the Windows setting or the manufacturer setting, but not use them simultaneously.
Ctrl key
Replacing the right Ctrl key can have consequences for shortcut combinations, especially when using the left Shift key together with the right Ctrl key. Microsoft advises using the right Shift key in that case, should a combination not work as expected.
