Following changes to WhatsApp Business terms of service, various chatbots like ChatGPT and Copilot must leave the messaging app.
Last month, WhatsApp announced that it has updated its house rules. These state that external chatbots, not created by Meta, are no longer welcome in the messaging app. This includes well-known chatbots like ChatGPT and Copilot. Microsoft is now revealing more details about the departure from WhatsApp.

Copilot follows ChatGPT
OpenAI quickly announced its departure after WhatsApp’s house rules were made public. Microsoft follows suit and shares in a blog post what will change for users.
Copilot will remain available on the web and in the mobile app for iOS and Android. The company also recommends “exporting your chat history using WhatsApp’s built-in tools before January 15, 2026”. The new WhatsApp terms of service will officially take effect from that date. Until then, Copilot and ChatGPT will still be available in the messaging app.
Perplexity is expected to announce its departure soon as well. This means that only the Meta AI chatbot will remain. Companies using a chatbot for customer service may still offer it through WhatsApp.
