Microsoft is immediately discontinuing support for Microsoft Deployment Toolkit

Microsoft is immediately discontinuing the Microsoft Deployment Toolkit, which will no longer receive updates or support.

Microsoft is discontinuing the Microsoft Deployment Toolkit (MDT) with immediate effect. The tool will no longer receive updates or support, although existing installations will continue to function. Users should switch to alternative solutions such as Windows Autopilot or Configuration Manager.

No updates

Microsoft confirms that MDT will no longer receive future-oriented support. This means that there will be no more updates, security patches, or compatibility adjustments for new versions of Windows. Microsoft may also remove the download links in the long term. MDT will technically remain usable, but companies will run risks if they continue to stick to the outdated tool.

Autopilot or Configuration Manager

As alternatives, Microsoft recommends Windows Autopilot and Configuration Manager with Operating System Deployment (OSD). Autopilot is a cloud-based service that automates the rollout of devices and is aimed at modern, cloud-first environments. Configuration Manager is intended for organizations with existing on-premises infrastructure.

Microsoft advises companies to review their current deployment processes. They need to analyze which components are dependent on MDT, check existing task sequences, and adapt their documentation to the new situation. There is no direct migration option: migration requires adaptation of the workflows.

Existing MDT installations will continue to function for the time being, but companies that focus on stability and security are advised to switch to a supported solution as quickly as possible.

Death announced

The end of MDT comes abruptly on the one hand, but should not come as a surprise on the other. The solution has been on the list of deprecated solutions since December 2024. The fact that Microsoft is now announcing the effective end so suddenly may have to do with possible security problems in the tool that Redmond no longer wants to address.

In addition, MDT does not collect telemetry and has no link with Azure. This free approach is increasingly less in line with Microsoft’s business model. The impact is expected to be small: MDT has been considered outdated for some time and most organizations have already embraced alternatives. Those who do use MDT can continue to do so, although it will be more difficult to download the tool.
