Google lures Safari users to Chrome with a fast migration tool

Google Chrome is trying to strengthen its grip on iOS. A new migration tool makes transferring browser data much easier.

Google’s browser dominates every ecosystem, with the exception of iOS, where Apple’s own Safari browser reigns. Google is now trying to do something about this by simplifying the switch. It is launching a new tool to transfer data faster from one browser to another. The tool is available in the beta version of Chrome 145.

Migrate with one tap

This used to be a time-consuming and complex process that could only be done via desktop. The new tool removes that requirement, so data can also be transferred directly with an iPhone. Via Safari’s Export Browsing Data feature, you can download all your browser data (passwords, bookmarks, etc.) in a ZIP file. Google’s tool helps you find the function and which data you want to transfer.

You can then easily import the data into the Chrome browser and it will seem like you have always used the browser. Keep in mind that your data will remain in your Google Account until you clean it up yourself. You will also see this notification during the migration process and there is an option to delete the data after importing it.

Cracks in the ecosystem

With this tool, Google is removing one of the biggest barriers to switching from Safari. Apple’s long-closed ecosystem shows cracks that Chrome is trying to slip through. Not that Chrome needs that extra push: it ended the year 2025 with a market share of 71 percent according to figures from Statcounter.

Safari is in second place by a wide margin with just under fifteen percent. It owes that market share entirely to iOS and macOS users. Yet Apple’s browser lost three percent in a year. Now that Google is also trying to conquer iOS, it remains to be seen whether users chose Safari because they effectively think it is the best browser, or because it was imposed by Apple.
