Gemini Omnipresent in ‘Biggest Chrome Update to Date’

Google wraps Chrome in a new AI coat. Gemini will act as a ‘proactive partner’ to help find information faster and browse more safely.

Google announces what it calls the ‘biggest update ever’ for Chrome. The update is based on a deep integration of Gemini into the browser. The renewal focuses on three domains: productivity, search functionality, and security. Google follows the new trend of ‘AI browsers’ with Chrome.

First Aid for Browsing

A first important addition is a browser assistant that contextually understands what you’re working on. This feature allows you to ask questions about the content of open tabs, search for references, or quickly find previously visited pages. In the long term, the assistant should also be able to perform complex tasks.

In addition, the address bar gets extra capabilities to ask questions and follow-ups in a chat window without leaving the page. Automatically suggested search queries based on the page a user is visiting will also appear. These features are currently available in English and will be rolled out further in the coming weeks.

Online Security

Finally, Gemini will also act as a security guard in Chrome. Google uses AI to make the browser experience safer. The technology helps with automatically filling in login credentials, blocking scams, and resolving security issues such as leaked passwords or unwanted notifications. You’ll be able to change leaked passwords with a simple click.

According to Google, these improvements ensure that Android users receive up to three billion fewer unwanted notifications daily. With these new AI functions, Google aims to make Chrome a proactive partner that helps users with daily digital tasks, without compromising on security or ease of use.

Anchored in the Ecosystem

Now that Google Chrome no longer needs to be sold, it anchors its browser deeper into the ecosystem. Gemini bridges the gap between Chrome and Google Workspace applications. Calendar, YouTube, and Maps are now seamlessly connected via Gemini, allowing users to schedule meetings or jump to specific moments in videos. Gemini connects with Workspace apps like Gmail, Docs, and Calendar to directly assist with drafting, summarizing, or planning, if you’ve given the AI assistant that permission.

Google is first rolling out the AI-driven update for Chrome in the United States. It seems likely to us that other markets and languages will follow quickly. Gemini will thus become an indispensable part of the Google ecosystem.
