Google shares more details about its plan to launch AI glasses powered by the Android XR operating system.
The AI glasses were first announced in May during Google’s I/O developer conference. Now the company is revealing more details about what the glasses will look like exactly. There are two types of AI glasses: the new wired XR glasses and Developer Preview 3 of the Android XR SDK.
AI Glasses
The AI glasses are the result of a collaboration with Samsung, Gentle Monster, and Warby Parker. Google is working with these partners on two categories. The first category focuses on screen-free assistance. These glasses will feature speakers, microphones, and cameras to provide assistance via Gemini, take photos, and offer contextual information based on the environment.

The second category adds a built-in display to the lens. This presents information in the wearer’s field of view, such as step-by-step navigation or translated subtitles. The first glasses in both categories are expected to appear next year.
Wired XR Glasses with Project Aura
In addition to standalone glasses, Android XR also supports wired XR glasses. These connect to other devices and combine a spatial display with a view of the physical environment.
Project Aura offers a 70-degree field of view and optical, transparent technology. Digital windows appear on top of the real world. Users can place multiple screens side-by-side for work or entertainment, without losing sight of their surroundings. Google cites examples such as a floating recipe video while cooking or a visual guide for repairs. More details about the launch of Project Aura will follow next year.
New Tools for Developers
To make this hardware usable, Google is introducing Developer Preview 3 of the Android XR SDK. Developers will gain access to APIs for AI glasses, XR headsets, and wired XR glasses. The SDK is intended to enable applications that use context, such as mobility services or travel tips, similar to the scenarios Google highlights with partners like Uber and GetYourGuide.
