ChatGPT Will Soon Require Age Verification to Protect Minors

OpenAI is working on a system to determine the age of ChatGPT users, so that they can be directed to a customized ChatGPT experience based on their age.

OpenAI unveils its plans to develop an automated age prediction system for its chatbot ChatGPT. With this, the AI company aims to protect the safety of teenagers while using the chatbot. The system should determine a user’s age, so they can be directed to a customized version of ChatGPT.

ID Verification for Adults

OpenAI is currently working on a system to determine whether a ChatGPT user is over or under eighteen years old. This way, the company wants to offer a customized ChatGPT experience for minors. “The way ChatGPT responds to a fifteen-year-old should look different from how it responds to an adult,” OpenAI stated in a blog post.

Once the system determines that a user is under eighteen, they should automatically be directed to a ChatGPT experience with age-appropriate policies, such as blocking explicit sexual content.

OpenAI admits that predicting age is not easy. When there is doubt, “we take the safe route and default to the under-eighteen experience.”

Parental Controls

While waiting for the above system, OpenAI offers another control mechanism to protect young people, namely through parental supervision. This allows families to determine how ChatGPT is used within their household. As a parent, you can link your teenager’s account to your own account, disable certain features such as chat history, or receive notifications in rare emergency situations.
