‘Zero trust security priority for organizations, but implementation leaves much to be desired’

Over half of the participants within Fortinet’s survey are unable to translate the zero trust vision into solutions that they put into practice.

Fortinet polled 472 cybersecurity professionals and business leaders worldwide on their progress in their evolution to zero trust security. According to the survey report, most organizations have a vision for zero trust or are in the process of implementing zero trust initiatives. However, more than half of them are unable to translate this vision into solutions that they put into practice. The reason is that some basic principles of zero trust are missing from their strategy.

There is especially confusion around the concept of zero trust. Three in four understand the concept of zero trust and a Zero Trust Network Access (ZTNA), and 80 percent report that their organization has it or is developing it. However, 50 percent of respondents said they were unable to implement core principles of zero trust. Nearly 60% said they lacked consistent authentication of users and devices. 54% additionally struggled with monitoring users after their authentication.

According to respondents, the high priority for zero trust is “minimizing the impact of security incidents.” This is followed closely by “securing remote access” or “ensuring business continuity.” Other key priorities include “improving the user experience” and “gaining the flexibility to provide security anywhere.”
