WhatsApp aims to better equip its users against message scams by offering more information and context about the person trying to contact you.

WhatsApp launches a new tool to help users guard against scams. Are you invited to a group chat? You will now see an overview with more information and context before joining the group.

Moreover, WhatsApp reports that it has removed over 6.8 million WhatsApp accounts “linked to criminal scam centers targeting people online and worldwide”.

Recognizing scams

This new feature pertains to group chats. WhatsApp is launching a security overview feature that appears when someone not in your contact list adds you to a group chat. In this overview, you will see all the information about the group. Is the group familiar to you? Then you can choose to view the chat messages for more context.

Additionally, scammers may try to contact you elsewhere on the internet before asking you to send them a private message via WhatsApp. “To protect ourselves against this tactic, we continue to test new approaches to warn people to pause before responding”, according to WhatsApp in a blog post.
